The 5 Road Blocks that might be Standing in the Way of Achieving Your Goals

The 5 Road Blocks that might be Standing in the Way of Achieving Your Goals

I sat down to ask several clients, all High Achievers, what made them invest in a Coach. They each had plenty of reasons, but everyone without hesitation included – helping push them and hold them accountable to achieving their goals.

Having a goal is one thing, making progress on that goal is another. Especially in a world that demands so much of our time and energy to be spread in a million directions in any given moment. It doesn’t take much before you’ve put what matters to you somewhere closer to the bottom of the list.
The critical pieces that were holding them back from achieving their goals were:

1)    Unclear or Undefined Goals

When goals are unclear, it’s easy to fall into the trap of being busy, rather than being productive. Having a long list of things to do is important to most high achievers. There is a sense of mastery and productivity gained in being able to check items off that list. How much energy is wasted on tasks that ultimately do not move you closer to what you really want – the Goal that’s waiting to be defined?

2)    Defining and Prioritizing Effective Action Steps

Often high achievers already have a goal in mind, but struggle with determining and defining the steps needed to get there. This leads to feeling “Stuck.” It’s letting the ideas flood your mind without a clear path to challenge and prioritize what is going to lead to forward movement.

3)    Starting from Stopped - Getting into Movement

Just like going to the gym, getting out the door is often the hardest part. When it comes to tackling a goal, taking the first step is critical to getting moving. Most often we get stalled when we get caught up in our own thought process trying to figure out the right first step. There is no right first step, just take a step! Whatever happens from there will help dictate your next move and before you know it, you’re back in motion and on your way to achieving your goal.

4)    Fear of Failure

Too often I hear clients holding back out of fear of failing. Rather than getting started and learning along the way, too many of us can get caught in our own heads playing out the possibilities instead of jumping in and trusting our ability to learn along the way. As a High Achiever, it’s important to adapt a learner mindset and avoiding labelling ourselves by outcomes along the way. We are not failures. We are learning. No one ever laughs at a baby who falls while learning to walk.

5)    Clearing the Obstacles – Beliefs & Assumptions

Perhaps the most challenging part of achieving important goals is recognizing the beliefs and assumptions we’ve created or adopted that now stand sharply between us and our goals. Whether we adopted them culturally, situationally, through our perception of the expectations of others, or to protect ourselves from pain, some of these are so deeply ingrained in our thinking that we aren’t aware of how they may be holding us back. Identifying and challenging these assumptions is a critical part of the Coaching Process.
